KIARI Legal
Children's Privacy Notice
KIARI is built for children, so this notice sets out separately how a child's own data is handled. It is written twice: once for children, and once in full detail for parents and guardians.
Last updated: 22 September 2026
This notice sits alongside our general Privacy Notice. Where the two differ on anything concerning a child, this notice applies.
If you are the student, read this bit
What KIARI knows about you
KIARI knows your first name (or whatever name your parent typed in), how old you are, what school year you are in, and what grade you are working towards. It uses those to pick maths questions that are the right level for you, so you are not given work that is far too easy or far too hard.
While you work, it keeps track of which questions you got right, which ones you found tricky, and which topics you have done. That is how it knows what to teach you next.
Your lessons are recorded
This is the important one. When you talk to your tutor, your voice is recorded, and so is everything the tutor says and everything that appears on the board. That recording is saved so that you, and the parent or guardian who set up your account, can listen back to the lesson afterwards.
So it is worth knowing: a grown-up on your account can hear what you said in a lesson. Nobody else can. We do not put your lessons online, we do not show them to other students, and we do not sell them to anybody.
If you say something that worries us
KIARI watches out for a small number of serious things, like somebody saying they might hurt themselves. If that happens, the parent or guardian on your account is told. We do that because we would rather somebody checked you were alright.
If something is worrying you and you would rather talk to somebody who is not your family, you can call Childline free on 0800 1111, any time, and they will not tell anyone you called.
Things you can ask for
- You can ask what KIARI has saved about you.
- You can ask for something to be corrected if it is wrong.
- You can ask for your lessons or your account to be deleted.
- You can ask us to stop using your information.
Ask a parent or guardian to email baileyturan05@gmail.com, or email us yourself. You will not get in trouble for asking, and it does not cost anything.
For parents and guardians
The rest of this notice is the detail behind the section above.
1. Who is in control of the account
A KIARI account is opened by an adult, and the contract is with that adult. A child does not sign up, agree to terms, or pay. Every new account currently receives one free trial lesson.
The app accepts a child age from 4 upwards. In the UK a child can consent to an online service in their own right from age 13, but because KIARI relies on a contract with the parent rather than on the child's consent, parental authority is required for every account regardless of the child's age.
2. What we collect about a child, and why
| Data | Why | Could we run the service without it? |
|---|---|---|
| First name or nickname | So the tutor can address the child by name. | Yes, but lessons would feel impersonal. A nickname is fine, and we never ask for a surname. |
| Age, year group, predicted grade | To pitch questions at the right level from the first lesson. | No. Without these the first lesson is a guess. |
| Our own estimate of their working grade, and their weak and strong topics | To decide what to teach next. | No. This is the core of an adaptive tutor. |
| Every question attempted and its outcome | Progress tracking, and so questions are not repeated. | No. |
| Audio recordings of the child speaking | So lessons can be replayed by the child and by you. | Yes. Teaching works without storing recordings. We keep them because replay is genuinely useful, and we treat this as the most sensitive thing we hold. |
| Safety flags and a short transcript snippet | So a serious disclosure is not missed. | Yes, but we consider it wrong to run a service used by children without it. |
We do not collect a surname, a home address, a school name, a date of birth, or a photograph.
3. What we never do
- We do not sell children's data, and we never have.
- We do not use it to build advertising profiles, and we show no advertising.
- We do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
- We do not use design techniques intended to keep a child using the service longer than they meant to. Lessons are time-boxed, there are no streaks, and there is nothing that punishes a child for stopping.
- We do not let one family's account see another family's data.
4. Lesson recordings
Recordings are the part of this notice worth reading twice. Each one contains a child's voice, which is identifying, and whatever they happened to say during the lesson, which is not always about maths.
- Recordings are visible only to the account holder, and to the small number of people who operate the service.
- Children are told at the start of their first-ever lesson that lessons are recorded. It is not buried in this notice alone.
- You can ask us to delete any individual recording, or all of them, without closing the account.
- Retention: 12 months from the date of the lesson.
5. Automated decisions about your child
KIARI decides automatically what to teach next and whether an answer is correct. These are not decisions with legal or similarly significant effects, so the Article 22 restriction on solely automated decisions does not apply. They do affect your child's learning, so you can always query a judgement with us, and because lessons are recorded it is possible to check exactly what happened rather than take our word for it.
The tutor is an AI and can be wrong about maths. If you find an error, report it through the help option in the app and we can trace the lesson.
6. Safeguarding
How a concerning disclosure is handled, who reviews it and how to escalate is set out in the Safeguarding Policy.
7. Exercising a child's rights
A child has the same data protection rights as an adult: access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability and objection. In practice a parent or guardian exercises them on the child's behalf, and we will normally act on a parent's request without further checks beyond confirming the account.
An older child can make a request directly, and we will consider it on its own merits, including whether they understand what they are asking for. Where a child asks us not to tell their parent about a request, we will weigh that against our safeguarding obligations rather than agree or refuse automatically.
Email baileyturan05@gmail.com. We respond within one month, free of charge.
8. Schools
KIARI is sold to families, not to schools. If that changes, a school using KIARI on behalf of its pupils would be the data controller for those pupils and a separate agreement would be needed. No such arrangement is in place today.
